What’s the best or worst investment you’ve made?

Last year, I invested in a comprehensive business management software platform that transformed the way I run my business. The platform simplified my operations, allowing me to manage my business more efficiently.

Before I started using the software, I struggled to manage various aspects of my business efficiently, such as following up with leads and clients. I spent too much time manually tracking tasks and performing administrative work, which prevented me from focusing on my core business activities.

The platform’s automation features enabled me to automate repetitive tasks, freeing up valuable time that I could then use to grow my business. My journey in entrepreneurship began over 20 years ago when I co-founded three companies while living overseas. My passion for helping individuals and businesses achieve their goals and reach significant milestones led me to form Five Milestones LLC after returning to the US. This transition challenged me to adapt and manage change.

To establish roots in my community, I volunteered as a certified SCORE mentor, helping others learn about starting and growing a business. This role gave me purpose and fulfillment, eventually leading me to become Chapter Chair for Flagler and Volusia counties. I also serve as an Entrepreneur in Residence at our local state college and as a Certified Entrepreneurship Facilitator, delivering 10-week business programs for our city to foster economic development.

Helping others achieve their dreams of entrepreneurship or scaling their business through sharing knowledge has been an enriching experience for me. It has enabled me to grow and use my Master of Science in Leadership degree to lead teams, that together have positively impacted many lives in our community.

Have you ever had to pivot?

The decision to delve into coding marked a transformative moment in my journey, one that ultimately led me down a path I never anticipated. Motivated by a desire to equip myself and my children while living overseas with the skills necessary for the future of STEM education, I immersed myself in learning coding. Little did I know that this decision would open doors to unforeseen opportunities.

For years, I had been developing educational iPhone apps as a hobby when a local university extended an invitation for me to participate in a NASA Space Challenge hackathon. Despite feeling underqualified, I seized the chance to leverage my coding skills to find solutions to real-world problems and educate others about the wonders of science and technology.

In 2013, our team’s efforts were recognized with a Global Honorable Mention for Most Inspiring, a moment that underscored the importance of taking risks and stepping out of comfort zones. This recognition served as the catalyst for the birth of my third business—an information technology outsourcing company.

Through this venture, we developed numerous native mobile applications, interactive iBooks, and training programs, including a STEM initiative for the State Department. Despite navigating through unfamiliar territory and stereotypes in a male-dominated industry, the gratitude from individuals whose lives were transformed by technology fueled my determination.

However, challenges persisted. Imposter syndrome crept in as I grappled with learning to code in a non-traditional manner and contended with age disparities in the industry. Yet, I learned to embrace my uniqueness, remaining steadfast in my mission to empower others to reinvent themselves through technology.

In 2016, our participation in the NASA Space Apps garnered further recognition, reaffirming the importance of perseverance and self-belief. Delivering a keynote speech at INCAE Business School became a crowning achievement, solidifying my role as a trailblazer in the technology sector.

Yet, life’s unpredictable twists once again altered our course, prompting a move back to the US and necessitating a fresh start. Despite leaving behind a wealth of experiences and accomplishments, I carry forward the invaluable lessons learned—embracing change, believing in oneself, and always moving forward, no matter the circumstances.
